By the end of the first class meeting, I share common things about myself with my students such as where I am from, what kind of sports I like and I play, what I will expect from them and what will they expect from me. I like to build strong trust between the students and me.
Instructional strategies:
- Repetition: At the beginning of each class, I go over what we covered in the previous sections and try to make a connection to what we will cover in the new section.
- Timed quiz: From time to time I gave a short quiz(2-3 questions) at the end of the class to ensure comprehension.
- Challenge question: I include a challenge question (1-3 questions) in the homework and have a discussion about it in the class. (especially for Calculus 1 & 2).
- Gain attention: I do my best to deliver the lecture in a way that gets all the students’ attention and to make a connection using real-world problems (especially in Bussiness calculus, College Algebra Growth/Decay questions). I use technology daily to engage students. In particular, I use a writeable Broward College loaned tablet to show graphs and write examples for students to understand key concepts. Using a writeable tablet helped me to get the attention of the class.
- I allow different student opinions in class: Students are encouraged to speak out and express their viewpoints during all lectures and class discussions. I know that my students have unique backgrounds and different experiences. I listen carefully to them during class discussions and respect their opinions.
student organization/club engagement:
- Academic Sucess Center (ASC): I work in the ASC since 2014; I offer 7 hours per week to provide students with more help.
- STEM club: For the academic year 2018-2019, I will serve as faculty advisor for the club. The greatest benefit for the students is that they can earn volunteer hours (we are checking on this), promote workshops for STEM majors, promote the (STEM MONITORING PROGRAM) SMP, and other related events.
- Co-curricular activities: I invited Dean Paul Moore, School of Business Dean, to speak to my Business Calculus class about Supply Chain Management. Also, I invited Associate Dean Mary Rousseau of the SUPPLY CHAIN MGMT., ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY & BUILDING CONSTRUCTIONS TECHNOLOGY to share the various certificates available exclusively for business calculus students at the college.
