Upon successful completion of this course, the student shall be able to:

  • work with algebraic concepts,
  • solve radical, quadratic, and absolute value inequalities,
  • work with relations, functions, and their graphs,
  • solve and graph logarithmic equations/functions and exponential equations/functions, and

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION | COURSE STRUCTURE

In this class, you will attend on-campus classes and may engage in structured out-of-class and/or online activities. The online and in-class activities may include but are not limited to, readings, discussions, essays, case studies, research, and quizzes & tests. See the course activity schedule for a detailed description of activities. Students are responsible for regularly reviewing the activity schedule and completing all assigned class activities.

This is a 3-credit hour blended course with four on-campus proctored exams. In this class, you will attend on-campus classes and engage in structured online activities.  The online activities include mandatory handouts, weekly independent learning in ALEKS, pre-class weekly assignments through D2L and ALEKS that are due before each class, weekly quizzes, and proctored exams with optional readings and videos.  See the course schedule for a detailed description of activities. Students are responsible for regularly reviewing the course schedule and completing all of the required assignments promptly.

You will be required to exercise a high degree of self-learning throughout the semester.  Remember that even though the material covered in this course is the same as the material covered in a traditional face-to-face class, you should be comfortable with your math ability, using a computer, e-mail, the Internet, and have excellent time-management skills since you will not be attending class on a regular basis. Our once a week class meeting are mandatory for all students.

Keep in mind that since we only meet once a week, you are responsible for spending the additional time necessary keeping up with the course material as it may not be possible to provide a thorough explanation of all course topics within the 75-minute session.  Therefore, there are video resources and work in ALEKS which will help you learn and master the weekly course objectives and assignments.

In a traditional face-to-face class, you would normally spend 3 hours a week in class, plus about 6 hours outside of class reading and be doing homework.  Therefore, expect to spend a minimum of about 9 hours a week on this course.  Most students spend between 10 to 12 hours a week depending on the topic.  If you cannot make that kind of commitment, please consider taking this course at another time.

It is essential that you maintain a disciplined study schedule since you will be working, for the most part on your own.  You must diligently finish all the assigned homework to be successful in this course.

All of the coursework will be presented online using a unique software called ALEKS 360.  The coursework is available online 24/7, so there is really no reason not to be able to do your work promptly.  See the course schedule for a detailed weekly description of learning activities with their associated due dates and times.

Please do not be embarrassed or hesitate to ask for help.  I am sure you want to pass this course, and I am here to help you.
